A sewage backup is a Category 3 (Cat 3) Black Water event under the IICRC S500 standard. It is defined as grossly contaminated water that poses a significant health risk. Our task is not simply to extract the water; it is to implement a systematic decontamination protocol that neutralises the specific pathogens and biohazards present in your property.
We are on call 24/7 across the Byron Shire and greater Northern Rivers region, providing immediate mobilisation for events ranging from a blocked toilet in a Wategos Beach holiday rental to a complete On-site Sewage Management System (OSSM) failure in the hinterland. Our technicians are equipped to manage the distinct challenges of Byron’s environment, including septic failures caused by sub-tropical downpours on saturated clay soils and storm surge backflow events common along the coast.
Not all sewage events are the same. A toilet overflow in a modern Suffolk Park home presents different challenges than a failed septic trench in a Myocum acreage property. Decades of work in the Northern Rivers have shown us the most common points of failure.
Vague promises of “quality service” are meaningless in a biohazard situation. Our work is strictly governed by the ANSI/IICRC S522 Standard, which covers sewage remediation. This is our non-negotiable, multi-step process for every contamination job.

Initial Hazard Assessment & Containment
On arrival, our lead technician’s first priority is safety. We check for electrical hazards and establish containment barriers using 6-mil poly sheeting and negative air pressure to stop airborne pathogens from spreading. All team members entering the contaminated zone wear full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including P100 respirators and non-porous suits.

Waste & Contaminated Material Removal
We extract standing sewage and solid waste using industrial-grade pumps and wet-vacuums. According to IICRC protocols, all porous materials that have absorbed Cat 3 water must be removed and discarded as biohazardous waste. This includes carpet, underlay, plasterboard, and insulation.

Structural Cleaning & Disinfection
Remaining non-porous and semi-porous surfaces are mechanically cleaned to strip away biofilm and residue. We then apply a hospital-grade, TGA-registered antimicrobial disinfectant to neutralise pathogens like E. coli.

Structural Drying & Dehumidification
We install commercial low-grain refrigerant (LGR) dehumidifiers and high-velocity air movers to aggressively dry the structure. We monitor moisture levels in timber framing, concrete slabs, and wall cavities daily with non-invasive meters until they reach the IICRC-defined dry standard.

Odour Control & Verification
Lingering smells can signal incomplete decontamination. We may use hydroxyl generators or thermal fogging to break down odour-causing molecules at their source. For assurance, we can arrange for post-remediation verification (PRV) testing by an independent hygienist, often required for insurance claims.
Our IICRC certification means we are trained to handle all categories of contaminated water intrusions, each requiring a specific protocol.
Grey water comes from sources like washing machine overflows, dishwasher leaks, or shower drain failures. While not as immediately hazardous as black water, it carries a significant bacterial load that can cause illness. In Byron’s humid sub-tropical climate, Category 2 water can degrade to Category 3 in as little as 24 hours as bacteria multiply. Our response involves rapid water extraction, the mandatory removal of affected carpet underlay, and application of an antimicrobial agent before commencing the structural drying phase.
This is our core specialisation. Any water from a sewer line, a toilet bowl containing feces, a failed septic system, or overland floodwater is automatically classified as Category 3 black water. Our remediation process is absolute, following the IICRC S500 and S522 standards without compromise. We focus on complete physical removal of contaminants and verified disinfection to return your property to a safe, sanitary, and structurally sound condition.
Our lead technicians maintain current certifications from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), the global standard-setter for our industry. Key certifications like Water Damage Restoration Technician (WRT) and Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (AMRT) reflect our commitment to the highest level of technical competence and safety.
We are fully insured with comprehensive public liability coverage for all work on your property. Our documentation, including moisture mapping and photographic evidence, is structured to meet the requirements of Australian insurance companies and complies with local regulations, including SafeWork NSW guidelines.
Our mobile teams are based in the Northern Rivers, enabling a rapid response throughout the Byron Shire. We possess deep experience with the unique building stock and environmental factors across all local areas:
Your immediate priority is safety. Evacuate everyone from the affected area. If safe, turn off the power to that part of the property at the main switchboard. Call a certified professional immediately. Do not touch the water or attempt to flush toilets, which could make the situation worse.
Standard home insurance policies often exclude it. Many insurers, however, offer a specific add-on for “water damage from sewer backup or drain overflow.” We provide the detailed reports, moisture readings, and photographic evidence that insurers require to process a claim.
A small, contained backup might require one day for cleanup and 2-3 days for drying. A major event affecting an entire floor of a house, especially one with a sub-floor, could take a week or more and involve significant removal of building materials.
For Category 3 black water, IICRC standards are strict: porous materials like carpet and underlay must be removed and discarded because they absorb dangerous pathogens. Sealed Australian hardwood flooring may be salvageable after specialised cleaning and disinfection, but we must assess it on a case-by-case basis.
A sewage intrusion is a health emergency that demands an immediate, expert response to protect your family or staff and the structural integrity of your property.
